If you, like I, you are content staying on your current Windows version. I found a neat utility called Never10 that will:

a) stop the notifications and remove the icons, and
b) free up the 5GB or so that the Windows 10 installation files are taking hostage.

For those of us with small SSDs for our boot drives, that extra 5GB of space goes a long way!

Check it out: https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

You can disable the 'automatic' update notification and also remove the files with just 2 button clicks.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive / FaceIt/CEVO

I've played a few games on these alternate MM platforms. What kind of experiences have you guys had?

The hitreg is a lot nicer with 128tick, but I've always had toxic teams since I usually just soloQ and join a PUG (pick-up game). I like FaceIt's web interface (I hate the idea of having to use a client, like CEVO) and it is very simple to add friends and create a party.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive / Our CS:GO Servers
« on: January 16, 2015, 02:17:53 am »
Hey all,

I have set up some CS:GO servers for us. They are highly configurable, so I am open to any suggestions that you have. Also open to suggestions for new servers, new plugins, etc. We have a huge amount of resources available to host servers so the sky is the limit. All of the servers are 128-tick. If you'd like admin privileges on the servers send me a PM on here with your SteamID and I will take care of it.

To connect to the servers, add them to your favorites list in-game by copying and pasting the address into the menu for easy access. You can also connect via console (by default it is the tilde (~) key)) and type "connect ip:port" where ip:port is where you'd like to connect to.

IP: nj.echo-gaming.net:27035

This server is running the popular Site Retakes mod. You will spawn as either a T or CT (there will always be more CTs if possible) and the objective is to kill the Ts and defuse the bomb (if you are CT) or kill all of the CTs before they defuse the bomb (if you are T). Type "!guns" in your in-game chat and you can choose your preferences. Bomb sites are randomly selected between A and B.

IP: nj.echo-gaming.net:27045

This server is running the multi-1v1 arena plugin. Each player has their own 1v1 match in their own "arena." If you win your watch, you go up to the next arena and play the winner, and so on. Very fun. Like in the site retakes server, type "!guns" in your in-game chat to change weapon preferences and to choose round preferences (pistol, rifle, AWP, flashbangs etc.).

IP: chi.echo-gaming.net:27015
Password: "chicken"

Private eG scrim server, password is written above. Feel free to give the password out and play with friends on it.

Enjoy! Let me know of any questions or concerns.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive / Servers
« on: January 04, 2015, 05:47:52 pm »
Hey guys,

We have the ability to host a few servers for CS:GO. We can host in NJ, Chicago and Vancouver, B.C.

They will be proper 128-tick servers. A few ideas come to mind..

- Deathmatch (respawning)
- Jailbreak
- Zombies
- Competitive
- Gungame (Arm's Race)

They will run metamod/sourcemod like most servers, with plugins that you guys can choose. You guys will get admin rights as well.

I'm open to all ideas, let me know what you think. We can also host CS:S but I'm not sure how popular it would be.

Hey all,

Since we're all pretty similar in age I figured we're in the same boat. How's everyone enjoying college?

I love getting up at 8 (sometimes 9) instead of 6 every morning! My classes are relatively difficult but I enjoy them. My time management and procrastination abilities are really being tested, so I'm trying to get my work done early instead of last minute. Lots of short term goals help keep me in shape both physically and mentally.

I'm only 5 minutes away from home (still living on campus though) and most of my friends from HS go here anyway so I don't find myself feeling homesick much. Have my car here and still work on weekends so I can always go home or visit a friend if I want to.

How's everyone else doing?

Hey all,

We have a Classic Casual server up right now in Chicago. What would you like next? Competitive? Gun game? Open to all suggestions.

Has anyone tried using the RepZ version of Black Ops? I know Poison has been playing a lot of Steam BO lately. It might be worthwhile to get some servers up but I'd like to know more about its stability first. Hopefully it's nothing like RepZIW4. :P

Since a lot of us are heading into college, I thought I'd let you guys know about something cool that you can get if you have a .edu email address.

Microsoft DreamSpark provides free copies of Microsoft software to students (regardless of major/career path). They have tons of software out there, but the most popular downloads are Windows Server 2012 R2 and Visual Studio 2013. With a .edu email, you can get access to it all, for free.

With what people pay for college these days, I'm not surprised that it's free. :P

Other Games / Island Life - Updated Installation Tutorial
« on: June 28, 2014, 12:08:23 pm »
Hey guys,

Since we've been playing this game a lot more, I figured I would make an updated tutorial so that it's easier for others to join us.

A quick synopsis of Island Life: Island Life is a role-playing game that runs on the ARMA II engine, the same that DayZ uses. It takes place in a large world with 3 different types of people: civilians, ESU (emergency services, like firemen) and BLUFOR (which is all police forces including SWAT, Coast Guard). Cops patrol and enforce traffic laws, respond to bank robberies and 911 requests and many other tasks. ESU repairs vehicles, puts out fires, and repairs bridges. Civilians can really do whatever they want. They can make money legally and illegally, commit crime, and other fun things. They can even become governor (I have a video of when Mike was governor.... terrible things happened). There are a lot of videos online of Island Life gameplay, so do a quick search to see what the game looks like.

Ok, so now to the installation process.

1. You need to purchase and install ARMA II and ARMA II Operation Arrowhead. At the time of this post, it only costs $12.49 to get them both, and they are both on sale via the Steam Summer Sale as a combo deal, where you can save a considerable amount of money by buying them both together.

Even if you don't plan on playing in the short future, you might as well grab the games while they're cheap. With ARMA II and ARMA II Operation Arrowhead you can play DayZ as well.

2. Next, we need to install the Island Life files. They're about 9.36 GB. We use a tool called Addon Sync to get the files. At this time, the download server for the files is relatively slow. To speed up the download, I have created a torrent with the files. Click here to download the torrent. Please keep seeding when we're done, or at least start seeding again if someone says on TeamSpeak that they are going to be downloading it.

Once the 7-zip archive has finished downloading, we need to put the @FFG folder into the right folder. The folder varies depending on your setup. For most, it will be
Code: [Select]
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead
I have my Steam games installed to a separate hard drive, so my path is
Code: [Select]
D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead
Simply drag the @FFG folder into your Arma 2 Operation Arrowhead folder. I used WinRAR.

When you're done, it should look like this:

Note: Ignore my @TCG and @DayZ folders - they are for some of my other ARMA II expansion packs. You don't need them for Island Life to work so just ignore them.

3. Now that we have done the speed-up step, we need Addon Sync. Click here to download Addon Sync. When it finishes downloading, install it like any other program and then open it up. Go to the "Favorite servers" tab and click on the "New server" button. Don't worry about the other text boxes - just copy and paste this into the "Auto config URL" field:

Code: [Select]
Click the "Import server" button right next to it. Now, it should look like this:

Now, go to the "Download addons" tab. Click the "1) Check for addons" button. Then click the "2) Download addons" button. Since at the time of this post the torrent is 100% up to date, there is nothing to download and everything is ready! :) It should look like this:

You can now close Addon Sync.

4. Start "ARMA 2: Operation Arrowhead" in Steam. Do NOT use the BETA version - it is buggy and will crash in-game!

When it comes up, click the "Expansions" button.

Find the @FFG one and check it.

Once again, ignore some of the Expansions that I have checked. If anything on your game is automatically checked for you, leave it that way. Just make sure that @FFG is now checked.

Click OK, then hit OK again to restart your game.

When your game comes back up, hit Multiplayer, and then hit Filter (all the way at the bottom). Make your settings look like this:

Hit OK, and then Refresh the server list. You should now see about 10 servers. The server that we play on is the one that is highlighted in the screenshot below - ([FFG] Island Life [The Port] | ffg.ts3dns.com | Stat Save).

5. In order to play on this server, you must be on their TeamSpeak. You don't have to talk, you just have to be on the server. Make sure your TeamSpeak name over there is the same as your in-game name, since a bot automatically kicks all people who aren't in TeamSpeak. I suggest that you add it as a bookmark and then use a middle-mouse click to put it in a second tab so that you can be on our TeamSpeak at the same time.

Once you're in the TeamSpeak, you can play! Remember: You can't be a BLUFOR/Cop unless you pass the cop test, it's a 50 question multiple choice and true/false test that you can take in their TeamSpeak. Until you're cop-trained, you can only play as a Civilian or ESU. Watch some videos on YouTube to get the feel of the game. Also, read over the FFG rules since you will need to know them while playing.

I look forward to playing with you all!

Trouble in Terrorist Town (Garry's Mod) / TTT servers back online

Hey all,

About a week ago I finally figured out why the TTT servers were not working: a small error in my update script. They're both back online!

So, who's watching it? Particularly, Team USA.

I couldn't watch the USA game last Monday because I was at a school trip in Washington, D.C. but I was able to watch the USA game yesterday afternoon. Sank in my chair as Portugal scored the equalizer - I would have loved to see Portugal lose (hi Nick!).

A lot of us are reaching the age where we're ready to head out to college. Where are you guys thinking about going, and for what major?

I want to major in Computer Engineering. I've applied to:

- Rowan University (Accepted)
- Drexel University (Accepted)
- University of Delaware (Pending)
- University of Pennsylvania (Pending)
- Lehigh University (Pending)

I'm still waiting to hear back from the last 3. It should be around late March when I know their decisions.

My #1 is UPenn. However, Rowan has also offered me an excellent scholarship (I could go for free), and I think it would be real hard for me to turn down the amount of money they would give me.
